Author Event: C. Thomas Rhyne, Ph.D. – The Poor Jamaica Man’s Plague

Driving down a winding road outside of Maurertown, local author Dr. C. Thomas Rhyne passed a historic home built centuries ago. Soon he would discover his connection to the property and the ancestors who once walked its halls and worked its orchards. In his new book, “The Poor Jamaica Man’s Plague,” Rhyne explores his ancestry, dating back to 1672 when Jonathan Tipton I and his family moved from Jamaica to the Shenandoah Valley. The book’s subtitle, “Mary Butler and John Tipton, Colonials in Transition,” looks at the relationship the couple shared, which Rhyne said was similar to many other colonial families of the era.
